Why does our planet have so many different languages rather than consolidating?

I think it's because of the relationship between nationality and identity. The world is becoming a smaller place, figuratively speaking, but the need to preserve traditional cultural differences and identity keeps national languages in existence. One language is becoming more necessary to enable greater communication for all. However, the time for one language only, a world language, is still a long way off.
